Presto, Pixar’s new short movie – inspired by Portal?

Here you can see an HD version of Presto, Pixar’s new short movie shown before Wall-E. It strongly reminds me of Valve’s Portal. Coincidence? I have no idea how long it took to make this movie, and of course the portal idea isn’t entirely new.

The portal idea isn’t new at all. Portal based 3D rendering engines were in heavy use in the mid 90s and all the fun things you can do with creating portals on the fly were heavily thought about. It is all pretty much obvious to practitioners of the art. Having said that, I don’t think Presto was inspired by Portal as I feel like I’ve seen old WB cartoons with similar schticks from 50+ years ago.

Yes, I know portals were used in engines in the mid 90s. Still, apart from the original Prey (which was never released) I can’t think of a game from that time that pushed the gameplay side of portals as far as Portal. And although I have seen cartoons with wacky physics (Bugs Bunny comes to mind, as well as Tex Avery), they did not remind me of Portal’s use of portals as Pixar’s cartoon did.

Pixar’s own “Monsters, Inc.” toyed with the portal idea heavily. Especially the hunt in the showdown sequence comes to mind, where the characters jump from door to door, from location to location.

And I think I remember a Marvel comic from the 80s, where a bad guy hat black spots on himself that he could place wherever he wanted and then reach through them … a Spider-Man story? I’m not sure …

Eh, there are never any new ideas in Hollywood. But there are an amazing variety of ways to tell them, so there.
