“The Nines” August 28, 2007

Filed under: Games, Other Media — Jurie @ 1:22

Robin just wrote about an intriguing trailer for a movie called The Nines. It looks like an ‘oh no reality is not what you think it is’ story, but with a video game twist. To which I say: what took you so long?

At one point you can see a Sims-like interface superimposed over the movie. Is it the ultimate product placement? Oh no wait, forgot about ‘Castaway’ and ‘Transformers’.

eXistenZ? Thirteenth Floor?

Hmmm…. good point. I haven’t seen Thirteenth Floor. As for eXistenZ: even though on the surface it’s about people inside a videogame, somehow I never felt that that was what the movie is REALLY about. I find eXistenZ much more impenetrable than, say, Lost Highway or Mulholland Drive. I like it a lot though.

Nirvana (1997) where Christophe Lambert is both the hero *and* a game designer.
How believable is that?

Another regular reader reminded me of Avalon, but there was no ‘oh noes we are in a game not reality’ theme there, if I recall correctly. (I am a big Oshii fan, but damn, Avalon just sucked for me.)

And I’ll take Jennifer Jason Leigh over M. Lambert any day, yum.

Actually, it’s not a “Sims-like” interface. It *is* the Sims 2 interface, just colored differently with a few items translated or reflected!

Ah… no wonder Robin freaked out :)
