Hi there. I'm glad to see that AIIDE's getting noticed, and particularly my work!

For those who might be looking for more details and information, here's a couple links to follow:

My work, PaSSAGE: http://ircl.cs.ualberta.ca/games/passage/

Heather Barber's work on dilemma-based interactive narratives: http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/~hmbarber/

Cheers!

Looking through the titles and reading some of the abstracts there's definitely an egghead/academic component to the work that is a little depressing. Still, you're right: the attempts matter, even if you or I (and I'm not speaking for you) think they might not be the right attempts.

As always, Chris is the standard bearer in this regard. I can't think of anyone who's backed up his beliefs more.

As for Mr. Hecker, I missed the episode you're refering to. Do you have a link, or other keywords that might help with a Google?

Yeah, even if half of it may not make sense, it's good to see people giving it a try at least. It remains an extremely hard set of problems to solve.

Soeaking of AI as the great promised land: did you catch the whole brouhaha around Chris Hecker and the Wii last March?

I haven't even read the linked text yet, but I agree with you wholeheartedly. On the Prairie Arts blog I wrote about my own frustrations regarding the limited application of AI in a variety of areas where I thought it held promise. The early excuse was that there wasn't enough processing power. Later excuses involved flat-out lies and self-delusion in the industry, and it wore me down.

You already know my take on interactive storytelling, and where I think the limits are. AI was always the great promised land, but too few people thought in terms of incremental advances. I'll be reading the link-text soon and following up. Thanks for the post.
